Latinsko idro regatta

Join the “Latinsko idro” regatta as a participant or spectator. Visit Murter in late September and experience some of the history of the locals, whose lives have been shaped by the sea and the Kornati islands.

The “Dani latinskog idra” event is held every September in Murter. The event started in 1998, when a group of enthusiasts started bringing an old custom, which used to be a way of life for all the people of Murter and Kornati, back to life. The most interesting part of the event is the international sailboat regatta called “Latinsko idro”. Around a hundred sailboats with spectacular traditional sails participate in the event, and it is held on the day of the patron saint of Murter parish, St. Michael.

Latinsko idro is the name of a specific type of sails – vertical triangular sails with similar or identical equipment and purpose, i.e. manner of sailing. The sail used in the area of Murter is called “oštro idro” (sharp sail). Three categories of wooden sailboats participate in this regatta (gajete, leuti, kaići). Apart from the main regatta, there is also the “Mala regata” (Little regatta, for children), “Didovin veslun” (row-boat regatta) and “Gajeta CUP” (sports regatta). Apart from the regattas, the event includes a rich cultural and entertainment programme, excursions, workshops for traditional ship-building and building of lateen sails.

The starting point of the regatta is always the old waterfront, Stara riva, located in the town centre.
